Pound Sterling exchange rate today

Sterling is the oldest currency still in use and, unit for unit, worth more than both the euro and the dollar. It is unusually sensitive to domestic politics: the pound has moved several percent in a single day on budget announcements, which is rare for a major currency.

Frequently asked questions

Because the ECB quotes everything per euro, and one euro buys less than one pound. A figure of 0.85 means one euro is worth 85 pence. Invert it, as the table on this page does, and you get euros per pound, which is how most British readers think of it. The two numbers are the same rate written from opposite ends.

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England: nine members, eight scheduled meetings a year, a 2 percent inflation target set by the government, and a published vote count for every decision. That vote split matters for sterling, because a five to four decision changes what the market expects next in a way a unanimous one does not.

Two separate shocks. After the referendum of 23 June 2016 sterling lost about a tenth of its value against the euro within days, on a repricing of Britain’s trading arrangements. In late September 2022 it fell again, to a record low against the dollar, after an unfunded fiscal package; the Bank of England intervened in the gilt market within a week. Both are visible in a long chart.

By dividing two euro reference rates. The cross-rate table on this site does that for every pair we cover, and clicking a cell opens the converter already filled in. No institution publishes an official pound to franc or pound to yen reference rate, so any such figure anywhere is derived, and small differences between sites come from rounding and from which day’s fix was used.
